Officer McAvoy Shipp collecting meds

It's time again for Clark County's bi-annual medication take-back event! On Saturday, October 27, take your unused and unwanted medications (including prescriptions, over-the counter medications, pills, liquids and inhalers) to any of our collection locations, and have them properly disposed of for free.

Doing so does more than keep your medicine cabinet clean and up-to-date. Flushing medications down the toilet cause them to enter our water supply, wildlife, and possibly our own bodies. Leaving them at home can make them available to young children and pets, posing a potential risk to household members. The majority of individuals who abuse prescription drugs (one of the most commonly abused drugs in the US) obtain them from family and friends, contributing to the over 400 prescription overdose deaths in 2016.

With flushing medication or leaving them in the medicine cabinet being unsafe options, the best solution is to bring unwanted medication to a take-back event or collection site. This led to Washington becoming the first state to pass drug take-back legislation, requiring drug manufacturers to implement collection systems for medications. Passed this March, the Secure Drug Take Back Act allows for year-round medication drop-off sites, keeping, unused, expired, and leftover medications out of homes and decreasing the risk of drug abuse and accidental poisonings.

Clark County's medication take-back will include five locations, two of which are accepting sharps and syringes. Medications may be brought in new or original containers, and labels do not need to be removed.Sharps can only be brought to Kaiser Permanente Cascade Park and Peacehealth SW Urgent Care. If bringing sharps, be sure to transport them in an approved sharps container or rigid plastic container with a lid, and label the container. DO NOT recycle sharps and syringes.

You can also find free year-round medication and sharps disposal sites on our website, or by calling Clark County Public Health at (564) 397-7352.
