Green Volunteer of the Year! Richard Reiter from Habitat for Humanity
Richard Reiter has been volunteering with the Clark County Habitat for Humanity Store since March 2011.
- Averaging about 1,000 hours per year, Rich has also earned the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from the Habitat for Humanity ReStores, signifying serving over 4,000 hours.
- He revamped their metal recycling program, and now the Habitat Store is able to accept literally tons of items like broken appliances from the public that they wouldn't otherwise – which keeps material out of the disposed waste stream while supporting habitat's mission to build homes at the same time.
- As the metal recycling program took off in Vancouver, with Rich training a crew of volunteers to assist him, we began to look at expanding that model in our other two stores. Rich offered to train staff and volunteers at other locations and helped implement the program across our organization. This program now averages an income of $35,000-45,000 per store each year. That's enough to build 1.5 homes each year. His contribution to our organization is beyond quantifiable. He has led by example, humbly, and generously.
