January 2018 Green Business of the Month
This month the Green Business spotlight shines on Mackenzie in Downtown Vancouver. This architecture firm has been around since the 1960's, and today has offices in Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver that have had lasting green impacts throughout the Pacific Northwest. Mackenzie values smart engineering and design, and demonstrate this in their Vancouver office that achieved Four Green Globes certification, becoming the second in the nation to do so. This certification has high standards for energy efficiency, water conservation, materials transparency and more.
In addition to their high standards for environmental design, Mackenzie values the human element of sustainability. Employees are rewarded for using alternative transportation and exercising, contributing to public health and environmental conservation. In matters of social justice, Mackenzie works internally and with clients to give more opportunities for the disadvantaged. For example, management at Mackenzie provides women with resources to become leaders in architecture, which has traditionally been a male-dominated field.
Mackenzie is a thriving example of sustainability's multiple facets. They demonstrate sustainability through social justice, public health, economic resiliency, and environmental conservation in all of their business practices, achieving progress in all areas without sacrificing any one. Their manifold approach to being green makes Mackenzie truly unique, which has added impressive diversity to the Green Business community.
