Meet the New Green Neighbors AmeriCorps Member!
A new AmeriCorps member, Shannon Hunter, has recently joined the Green Neighbors team and will be serving the community for the next year! Clark County Solid Waste and Environmental Outreach programs annually host members through the Washington Service Corps, and we are happy to continue this trend.
We asked Shannon a few questions so you can get to know her better! Be sure to say hi at virtual events or through email (you can reach her at [email protected])!
Where are you from?
I spent my childhood in beautiful Blacksburg, Virginia, known for its small town charm, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Virginia Tech. I moved to Charlottesville to attend undergrad at the University of Virginia, studying Environmental Sciences and Global Sustainability. Go Hoos!! Now I am incredibly excited to find a new home in the Pacific Northwest.
What's your favorite activity to do outdoors?
I love biking and hiking. You can usually find me going on a nature walk (with my mask on!), either listening to the sweet songs of Mother Earth, or singing along to the Taylor Swift songs that constantly drift through my mind.
What's your favorite animal?
I'm a lover of all species but gorillas have been my favorite since I was three-years-old. I would frequently check out library books about them. Through those readings, I learned about Jane Goodall, who researches a fellow primate, chimpanzees. She became my role model at a young age, demonstrating the impact women can have within the field of science and advocacy work.
What projects will you be working on for Green Neighbors?
My main focus is waste reduction and environmental outreach, so this includes working on the WasteBusters Challenge, the Natural Garden Tours, gardens at Pacific Park, and other outreach opportunities!
What aspect of serving with Green Neighbors are you most excited about?
I can't wait to get to know members of the community. I really want to cater sustainability outreach resources and events around what would be most interesting to you! Let me know of any ideas! I also am excited to learn more about working on environmental projects within local government.
Where in Clark County are you most excited to explore?
I'm stoked to check out the hiking trails and wineries within Clark County! Please let me know if you have any recommendations! I've already fallen in love with this area, and am looking forward to growing even more attached.
