Take the Waste Busters Challenge!
Busted!
Although Washington has a 50% recycling rate, the average Washington resident produces ~7 pounds of trash every day. That's more than the national average!
In a waste stream analysis of Clark County, 20% of landfilled waste could have been recycled in our blue curb-side recycling bins. One-third of the waste stream was organic material, such as food that could have been eaten or composted. Not to mention all of the littered material that doesn't make it into the trashcan. Your trash doesn't just disappear when you throw it away. There are over 2,400 landfills in the United States and that number is only going to increase.
So how can you reduce your waste? Join the WasteBusters challenge, from March 10-31!
You'll take one of three pledges, create an account, read resources on waste issues, participate in activities, and post on the blog about your waste-busting progress to earn points. Earn 500+ points for a chance to win one of 10+ prizes from solar-powered phone chargers to an excursion on the Portland Spirit!
Our challenges are designed to give you a variety of options and challenge levels. We've kept the general criteria simple, but you can adjust it to be as challenging as you desire. Whether you're just starting to think about waste issues or you've been living a highly-conscious lifestyle already, there is always room for improvement. We hope that your challenge will become a part of your lifestyle and that you'll be inspired to continue moving towards less wasteful, more environmentally-sustainable practices.
The 2018 Pledges are…
1. Fight Litter - keep a litter bag in your vehicle and never litter
2. Replace Plastic - eliminate a plastic material from your lifestyle with alternative solutions
3. Waste No Food - do not throw away or compost any edible food
