Bird Blitz! Bird Watching
BIRD BLITZ! at Tryon Creek State Natural Area
Hosted by Friends of Tryon Creek in cooperation with Oregon State Parks
What is BIRD BLITZ!?
Bird Blitz! is a bird diversity survey taking place in Portland’s very own Tryon Creek State Park! Located just 6 miles from downtown Portland, the forest is a refuge for many birds and animals unlikely to thrive in a city setting. Bird Blitz! aims to better understand which bird species live at Tryon.
Come early! Since birds are more active in the early morning, we suggest coming early to spot the largest variety of birds.
Take a quick trail walk, or make a morning of it and explore further into the heart of Tryon. Simply drop your survey sheet into the drop box at the Nature Center whenever you return.
What Will I Be Doing?
We will provide a checklist of birds potentially found within Tryon Creek State Park. Your task is to meander through the park on one of the many trails and note the birds you observe. If you see a bird, or hear its call, you will simply check off the box next to the bird you saw. You can survey for any amount of time you see fit, whether that is for 20 minutes or for the full event.
Why is BIRD BLITZ! Important?
After having been over-logged by Lake Oswego’s iron smelting industry in the late 1800s, Tryon’s forest is now in the secondary stages of regrowth. As part of that process, many species that are unable to survive alongside Portland’s urban development make their home in Tryon’s forest.
At present, little data exists about the avian residents of Tryon. BIRD BLITZ! aims to create a comprehensive list of birds that visit and/or reside in the Park. That list will aid in the understanding of the range, behavior, and abundance of those birds.
