Stores like New Seasons Market once offered a convenient drop-off option for people to recycle items that are not allowed in curbside collection bins. However, due to a recent change in the global recycling industry, many stores and facilities are no longer accepting certain types of plastics, such as plastic bags and film, rigid plastics (lids, bins, crates) and mixed plastics which include plastic cups and food containers (plastic clamshells and tubs). While these changes do not affect your residential curbside collection, it is even more important to make sure we are placing the correct items in our bins and striving to reduce the amount of contamination that is sent to our sorting facility.
What can you do?
- Put only approved items in your curbside recycling bin
- Bring your own reusable bag to stores
- Reuse plastic containers when purchasing bulk items
- Avoid take-out food in non-recyclable containers
