Green Business Spotlight: Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell and Corwin Beverage Company

In February 2018, Corwin Beverage Company and Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell were awarded Green Business of the Year awards at our annual Green Awards ceremony. These businesses were recognized for their dedication to sustainability and the community. We caught up with these winners to see what they've been up to this past year!

Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell

Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell, a yoga studio in Vancouver, was awarded the Green Business of the Year award in the Small Business category.

For those who aren't familiar, Bikram Yoga is a style of hot yoga practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% humidity. This would normally require a lot of energy to create those indoor conditions here in the northwest, but this studio was designed to be super-insulated and energy efficient, conserving energy by trapping the heat in the studio.

By ceasing the use of paper towels and other non-recyclable products, the studio produces very little garbage. Water-conserving faucets, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, and LED lighting are just a few of the tools that Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell uses to be green.

Since winning their Green Award last year, Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell has gone paperless for their class registrations, eliminating the need for a printer and paper. In addition, the studio only sells products that are not harmful to the environment. Examples include athletic wear made form recycled plastic bottles, beverages sold in recyclable containers, and eco-friendly cleaning supplies designed for the care of yoga equipment. For all these reasons and more, we are happy to have Bikram Yoga Hazel Dell in the Green Business community!

Corwin Beverage Company

Corwin Beverage Company is a beverage distribution company in Ridgefield, and won the Green Business of the Year award for the Large Business category in 2018.

Waste reduction is a huge focus of Corwin's green team. Before the 2018 Green Awards, the company worked hard to recycle over 100,000 pounds of materials that other companies may have sent to the landfill. In addition, the green team at Corwin has maintained a garden plot at their facility, using compost produced onsite from employee food scraps. Employees are encouraged to take the garden's vegetables home to cook fresh, healthy meals with their families.

Receiving a Green Award last year only encouraged Corwin to progress further with their green practices. This past fall, Corwin hosted a Don't Drip and Drive event with the Watershed Alliance to check employee vehicles and company fleet vehicles for oil leaks, as part of a campaign to reduce pollution in local waterways.

Corwin is also a strong supporter of the community, often donating and lending a hand a local schools and non-profit organizations. The work that Corwin does for the environment and the community are key factors in their status as an award-winning Green Business.
