Zero-waste Gifting

Green Neighbors is celebrating its 9th year as a part of Clark County Solid Waste and Environmental Outreach, promoting sustainable living to build a strong, environmental community. To commemorate we will be sharing zero waste gift ideas great for any occasion! Practicing zero waste means producing as little trash as possible and opting for reusable and recyclable items. By giving gifts that are zero waste you can inspire friends and family with your creativity and good taste.

 Finding things at home!

1. Food: Investigate your pantry! Do you have flour you haven't used in a while? Were you recently gifted some new spices? Bake your loved ones a home-made treat that they can enjoy for days after the gift is given.

2. Plants: If you have any houseplants in your home that may need trimming, cut off a propagation and share the greenery with others. You can also reuse old containers and jars to create a fun pot for the new plant. I like to spice up old oatmeal containers and gallon jugs with some glitter and paint.

3. Art: If you have art supplies around the house, use them to create a painting, drawing or other piece of artwork. My mom's favorite gifts have always been those I create myself.

 Hitting the storefronts!

1. Thrift stores: Thrifting provides many opportunities for finding one-of-a-kind gifts. You may stumble across something you hadn't thought of previously. Check out Clark County's Thrift Store and Donation Map to explore local thrift options.

2. Lifestyle goods: Finding items that promote zero waste can be both functional and exciting. This includes items like water bottles, plastic-free bath products, and tote bags for shopping.

Other Ideas!

1. Donations: Is the recipient passionate about a certain topic? Donate to an organization that supports a cause important to them. If they love animals, donate to a local shelter.

2. Experiences: Museum tickets, seats at their favorite sporting event, or an opportunity to see live music at their favorite outdoor venue are all meaningful gifts that provide an experience the recipient will not forget.

3. Subscriptions: As the weather cools down, give friends and family a way to relax during their free time. Netflix or Spotify subscriptions are a great way to give a gift that is zero waste and will be put to good use. Maybe music or TV is not their thing, so consider other subscription options for eBooks, the gym, or online classes.

A note on gift wrapping- There are many options for wrapping a gift without buying a new bag or paper. Use old newspapers, fabric from a shirt you haven't worn in years, or simply let the gift speak for itself.

Whether it's for a birthday, holiday or just a kind gesture, this guide can help you decide on a gift that you, the recipient and the environment can feel great about.
