Green Neighbors Program

The Clark County Green Neighbors Program is coordinated by Clark County Public Health’s Solid Waste and Environmental Outreach to assist citizens with developing more sustainable lifestyles and building a strong environmental community in Clark County. Solid waste regional planning and programs are a cooperative effort of Battle Ground, Camas, Clark County, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver, Washougal, and Yacolt.

Water Center Garden Cleanup

Come learn with us as we explore several planning and design techniques to bring more nature to your yard. We will work with Jane Tesner Kleiner, a local landscape architect, ecologist, environmental educator and disabilities advocate, to plan for your yard improvements. We will discuss techniques that you can use to transform your world using locally sourced native and landscape plants. Feel free to bring photos or aerial maps (Google) of your property and we can get you started on your way to creating a nature-haven!

2024 Film Series: Deep Rising

This up-to-the-minute tale of geopolitical, scientific, and corporate intrigue that exposes the machinations of a secretive organization empowered to green light massive extraction of metals from the deep seafloor that are deemed essential to the electric battery revolution.

Deep Rising illuminates the vital relationship between the deep ocean and sustaining life on Earth. The documentary also follows mining startup The Metals Company, as it pursues funding, public favor, and permission from the International Seabed Authority to mine wide swathes of the Pacific Ocean floor.

Blueberry Pruning Workshop

Love juicy, sweet just-picked blueberries from your own bushes? Not sure how to keep them performing at their best? Join Master Gardeners for an in-person hands-on workshop on blueberry pruning.

Join us at our Vancouver area demonstration blueberry field to learn and practice your skills. This entails a 5 - to 10-minute walk up a steep hill. Those with mobility issues may drive. Dress for the weather and bring water, garden gloves, and a pair of sharpened loppers or hand bypass pruners if you have them.

Plants, bare root starts, cuttings are welcome but PLEASE keep dirt(y) items outdoors and refrain from sharing invasive species.

Pollinator Posse

You’ve likely heard about the recent decline in bee populations. And you probably know that bees and other pollinators play an essential role in food production – making possible, development of all variety of fruits, vegetables, coffee, chocolate, beer and wine and more.  Did you know that you play an important role in helping to support our local native pollinators?! 

There are simple actions you can take to provide food, shelter, water and space for a wide variety of beautiful and interesting-to-watch pollinating insects and birds. And the bonus is a beautiful addition to your home landscape.  Join the Pollinator Posse! This introductory level, small, interactive, group learning session put on by the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener program will introduce you to our pollinators and the plants upon which they depend. Get ideas on how to start a pollinator garden. This is an introductory workshop, it is not a lecture. Wednesday, February 7 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Space is limited. Free. Put on in partnership with Clark County Public Health Green Neighbors Program. Participants will receive flower seeds and pollinator plants to take home. Bee the Change!

This year, on February 17, 2024, we will be planting native trees and plants throughout the urban natural area, Sam Brown Park. Dr. Julian Ankney, the Campus Director of Native American Programs at WSU Vancouver, and Dr. Desiree Hellegers, the Director of the Collective for Social and Environmental Justice at WSU Vancouver, will open the day with a conversation about environmental and racial justice. There will be snacks and hot drinks available throughout the event.Training, gloves, tools, water and snacks will be provided. This opportunity is family-friendly and great for teens – people of all ages and abilities are welcome. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Vancouver’s Water Center wetlands are home to many Columbia River animals. Learn how to interpret the clues left behind by learning foot morphology and gaits of our common wildlife residents. Class will be held outside, rain or shine. This class is great for beginners who want to grow their pattern recognition and animal tracking skills.

This class is suitable for adults and youth ages 10 and older. Expect to go slowly, often standing in one place, as we decipher the tracks we find. Plan to be off-trail and in sandy areas with uneven terrain and mud. All minors need to be accompanied by an adult.
