Plant Information
Pinus virginiana 'Driscoll' is a slow-growing, compact, globose selection of Virginia shrub pine with attractive, short, light-green needles and purplish branchlets. After 10 years of growth in the garden, one can anticipate a miniature broad cushion 16 inches (40 cm) tall and 24 inches (60 cm) wide, a growth rate of 1.5 inches (4 cm) per year. This and many Pinus virginiana cultivars are well suited for gardens in the southeastern U.S. and anywhere else that is prone to excess heat and humidity where other Pinus species fail.
Of the small different cushion shaped pine for the rock garden the shrub pine cultivar known as ‘Driscoll’s’ is rare but very interesting.
Morphology: This dwarf conifer only grows to 6’ in height but can reach out to 16’ across after 10 years of growth. Each year only 1.5” of new growth occurs.
Adaptation: Select a sunny site with good drainage.
