Sea Lavender/Statice

  • Scientific Name: Limonium latifolium
  • Garden: Xeriscaping Garden
  • Plant Type: Herbaceous Perennial
  • Evergreen/Deciduous: Evergreen
  • Sun/Shade Exposure: Full Sun
  • Moisture Requirements: Moist, Well-Drained

Plant Information

Sea lavender, Limonium, forms a neat rosette of large, attractive oval leaves, which often turn bronze-red in the sun. In midsummer, frothy masses of papery, purple flowers appear on wiry stems. The flowers gradually dry out on the plants and, though faded, persist into late summer. They make an excellent cut flower for dried arrangements – simply cut them just before they are fully open. Limonium speciosum ‘Blue Diamond’ is a compact cultivar, bearing bright blue flowers. Grow it in well-drained soil in full sun, at the edge of a border, in a rock garden or container.
