Located in downtown Vancouver, Vancouver Spinal Care offers chiropractic care, massage therapy, and care for accidents and injuries. This 5-person office proves that it's possible to go green by setting a goal, changing habits and making small, incremental changes to reduce energy consumption and waste.
Vancouver Spinal Care launched their greening efforts with a goal to reduce energy use. They evaluated lighting and removed bulbs that weren't needed. They further improved their lighting efficiency by installing occupancy sensors in rooms that aren't constantly used during business hours.
Next, an office shut down procedure was incorporated into their energy conservation strategy. When it's time to go home for the evening, employees make sure to twist the blinds closed, and computers, mice, the printer, and lights are all turned off.
To reduce paper use, Vancouver Spinal Care created a new patient form for their website that can be completed electronically, and they use linens on massage headrests instead disposable paper covers. Rather than reach for a paper cup, employees are expected to have their own reusable mug for day-to-day use.
When Kevin, the leader of Vancouver Spinal Care's environmental efforts, was asked if he had tips to share with others interested in greening their own workplace, he said that breaking old habits is possible but sometimes difficult, so it's important to pay attention to the small things and use reminders. Even little details such making sure there are signs on the recycling bins can make a difference.
