Looking for a Way to Get Outdoors? Volunteer in the Natural Gardens at Pacific Park!
Whether you have a green thumb or you're a greenhorn, you can get involved in gardening! Clark County Public Health and the WSU Clark County Master Gardeners oversee eight demonstration gardens at Pacific Community Park, and they are in need of gardeners. These gardens are meant to teach community members about natural ways to landscape at home. In the Edibles and Herbs Garden, visitors can learn to grow healthy food and cut down on their grocery bill. The Wildlife Garden demonstrates how to provide food, shelter and water for birds and other local creatures. In the Beneficial Insects and Compost Garden, anyone can become an all-natural gardener by attracting insects and using compost to keep their lawns healthy. Even someone with little time to dedicate to their yard can benefit from the Native Plants Garden, which boasts plants that thrive in local conditions without much care, or the Lawn Alternatives garden, which demonstrates alternatives to traditional lawns which are still varied and productive. Get some ideas on safe but beautiful plants for you and your furry friend to enjoy in the Dog Friendly Garden. The Xeriscaping Garden is perfect for those who don't want to have to do any additional watering, and the Rain Garden with Vegetated Bioswale teaches the dedicated environmentalist to use their yard to reduce pollution, attract wildlife, ease flooding and restore aquifers.
You don't need to be an expert to get involved! Jobs at the garden include everything from weeding and pruning to sprucing up gardens with plantings. It's a great opportunity for students who need service hours or anyone looking for an excuse to get outside! Each event will be directed by the Garden Coordinator, who will provide guidance and assign duties. Gardening tools are provided, but be sure to bring a water bottle and a snack. Also, remember to bring a signed consent form if you are a volunteer under 18. Any volunteers who are 13 or younger need to be accompanied by a guardian throughout the event.
