On the Road Tour-A Sense of Place: Discovering Hood River

Thursday, September 26 8:15 am - 5:00 pm

Join the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener program for an on-the-road- tour and leave the driving to us! Our destination is Hood River, and our theme is "A Sense of Place. Our first stop is OSU Extension Hood River County, where the Master Gardener Coordinator will discuss microclimates. The location provides a view of several areas around Hood River where we can observe the impact of planting decisions made based on microclimate.

Next stop is Good News Gardening, where the owner will talk about efforts to help people make informed choices about plants for specific locations, expanding our understanding of microclimates and choosing the “right plant for the right place.” They offer expert advice to help make garden dreams come true. Good News Gardening has thousands of plants as well as a beautiful gift shop.

Lunch is on your own at Bette's Place, where they specialize in homemade food made fresh daily.

Our last stop is Packer Orchards and Farm Place, a family-owned orchard and bakery, where we will learn about how their operation deals with Hood River microclimates. Before departing, we can buy fresh fruits and homemade bakery goods. Cost: $35. Vans will prepare for departure from Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Hazel Dell (Vancouver) at 8:15 AM and arrive back there at 5:00 PM. Registration required by Sept. 18th here. Introduction to Plant Propagation

Friday, September 27 9:30 am - 11:00 am

There are literally thousands of plants you can propagate at home; all it takes are a few materials and a little technique. Looking for a cost-effective way to fill your garden? Have an heirloom plant you’d like to “make more of” and to share with family or friends? Plant propagation may be the answer! Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop with instruction on basic propagation techniques. Participants will take home two plants they propagate during the workshop. If you have a small plant you’d like to propagate, bring it in a small pot. The class takes place in a greenhouse and requires standing. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes. 9:30 to 11am. Cost: $5. Advanced registration at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-plant-propagation-workshop-hands-on-tickets-995370358537. Contact: erika.d.johnson@wsu.edu or (564) 397-5738.
